Can my loft be converted

Most lofts can be converted as long as there is enough headroom. Bespoke loft conversions can give you advice on the best type of loft conversion for your property, where the stairs will be positioned and any changes to the plumbing system.

The traditional rafter which is the older type of roof is much easier to convert as it has  the headroom required. The majority of houses built before the 60's will have the traditional rafter roof.

The modern trussed roof can also be converted as long as there is a over two metres of headroom halfway across the loft.

What is a Mansard Loft Conversion

Mansard loft conversions are constructed to the rear of your property which has a flat roof, with the back wall sloping inwards at an angle of 72 degrees. The advantage of a mansard roof creates a much larger space and often allows more space for the staircase.

Mansards are most common on older houses, and popular type of loft conversion in London, planning permission will almost certainly be required for this type of conversion.

What is a Dormer Loft Conversion

Dormer loft conversions are loft conversions with the roof being extended, giving extra floor space and height within the loft. These protrude from the roof either at the front or back of the property and can be built in a number of different designs to fit inline with the style of your property.

Rear roof dormers are the most popular and can accommodate windows, french doors and balconies. Velux windows can be placed on the front of the roof creating more natural light and ventilation.

What is a Velux Loft Conversion

Velux loft conversions are roof light conversions. These are windows that are fitted to the angle of the roof, leaving the structure of the roof untouched.

This is a very popular type of loft conversion for many people as the roof does not need large modifications, which keeps the cost down and very rarely does planning permission need to be required.

Velux loft conversions are ideal for lofts with a large amount of headroom or if you live in a conservation area. If you have limited height in your loft a mansard or dormer loft conversion would be a better choice.
